Behind the song · Serina

Three Questions with Bleeding December

Mel and Dave share the story behind “Serina,” the nostalgic sound they’re building, and their hopes for what comes next.

1. What inspired “Serina,” and is there a lyric or moment in the song that means the most to you as a band?

Mel

I wrote “Serina” for my long-term partner, Serina. We’ve been together since we were teenagers, and we’ve grown together through different stages of our lives.

She has always had a special connection with mermaids. In Filipino, a mermaid is called a sirena. I loved how similar sirena sounds to Serina, and that little connection inspired the title of the song.

For me, “Serina” is more than just a name. It’s a song about the woman I’ve shared so much of my life with, inspired by her, her love for mermaids, and the story we’ve built together.

2. For someone discovering Bleeding December through MSR, what would you want them to know about your sound and the stories you tell?

Mel

They’re all pretty much love songs. I wrote those songs when I was at the peak of my emotions, so all the words and melodies just came out naturally. All of those songs are special and mean a lot to me.

We would like to be identified as a band that sounds like the early 2000s punk and alternative bands. We want to bring a nostalgic experience to all our listeners.

Dave

Definitely those late 90s early 2000s nostalgic vibes with catchy riffs and melodies.

I leave the lyrics to Mel, but working on riffs, arrangements, and melodies is definitely the funnest part of the process for me.

3. What’s coming next for Bleeding December, and where can MSR listeners follow your journey or catch you live?

Dave

I'm hoping we can build on the positive reception the songs have received so far and continue to grow our audience. Being able to tour across the Philippines would be amazing.

Mel

I think I will still go down the same path because I think the golden era of music was around the early 2000s, especially for the genre that we have. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and anywhere you stream your music!
